Bellarine Peninsula Basketball Association remains committed to responding to COVID-19 in a manner that promotes a safe work, playing and learning environment for players and coaching staff and is committed to caring for the health and wellbeing of our basketball community. 

As an Association we continue to follow National Principles following close consultation with Federal, State/Territory and/or Local Public Health Authorities, as relevant. We continue to seek advice from Basketball Victoria. 

The following operating guidelines have been developed to assist the Association in implementing risk mitigation strategies related to COVID-19. It includes guidelines regarding, playing environment, playing protocols, illness management, return to sport and the responsibilities of the player, parents, coaches and Biosecurity Officer (BSO) of the Association at this time. 

Education 

To reduce the risk of COVID-19, education of players, coaches and parents and other personnel about risk mitigation strategies is crucial. It should not be presumed that players, coaches and other personnel have an appreciation of the health risks. Education will help to promote and set expectations for the required behaviours prior to recommencing activities.

Our Educational measures: 

– Educating all players, coaches, parents and other personnel about risk mitigation strategies is crucial.

 – Recommend all players, coaches and parents and other personnel download the Australian Government COVID-19 contact tracking app (COVIDSafe), to reduce the risk of COVID-19 spread to the community and/or sport. 

– Education will be disseminated initially to all players, coaches and parents and other personnel via email and social media. 

Assessment of playing environment:

Below are considerations for the safe resumption of formal games starting on Monday 13th July 2020 noting specifics around the Bellarine Peninsula Basketball Association Competitions facility and environment. Considerations are; 

  • Bellarine Peninsula Basketball Association will supply two basketballs, one for each team to warm up with and use as a game ball.  The balls will be cleaned before each team uses them, at the end of each quarter and at the end of the game.
  • A maximum of 50 Junior players (Under 18) and a maximum of 20 adult players and allocated coaches per game session.
  • There will be a Biosecurity Officer (BSO) Supplied by Bellarine Peninsula Basketball Association

Cleaning 

  • Players are not to bring their own basketballs. Basketballs will be supplied by Bellarine Peninsula Basketball Association.  All balls will be sanitised prior to use, at the end of each quarter and at the end of the game.
  • Hand sanitiser will be readily available at all times, but particularly upon entry and exit of the venue. 
  • Hand Sanitiser on Score Bench – Sanitise Score Bench with disinfectant wipes before and after session 

Get in, play & get out 

Strategies to limit time and person-to-person contact on site to be implemented 

  • Minimise use of communal areas. Toilet Facilities Open. 
  • No eating on site. All players are to bring their own personal drink bottle. 
  • Between games, players and coaches will maintain a distance of at least 1.5m apart

Illness Management In the event an athlete records a high temperature or reports illness during a game;

  • Athlete to be placed in an isolation area
  • Parent contacted for immediate pickup 
  • Player to be picked up from discussed point 
  • In the event a coach records a high temperature or becomes ill during the game; 
  • Coach to be isolated in a separate room until players have left the premises. 
  • – All parents contacted for pickup 
  • – Coach to seek immediate medical advice and be tested for COVID-19 if requested.

Biosecurity Officer (BSO);

Who

  • The BSO may hold multiple duties at the same time provided, they can prioritise the responsibilities of the BSO role when required;
  • The BSO must be clearly identifiable within a venue at any time, by wearing a High Vis Vest.

Purpose

  • To monitor and report on a venue’s compliance to BV’s Return to Sport Guidelines 
  • To record the number of people within a venue at a time
  • To minimise the risk of person to person transmission of COVID-19 within a venue
  • To provide necessary information to the Association in the event of a positive COVID-19 test from one of the participants

Duties

  • To take and record everyone’s temperature upon entry to the venue (anyone with a temperature of 38 or more will not be allowed to enter the venue)
  • Will monitor no more than four (4) courts at a time
  • Will complete the venue checklist prior to the commencement of games
  • Will complete the venue checklist and record the number of participants within the venue during each allocated game timeslot
  • Will ensure that equipment is sanitised in accordance with the RTS Guidelines
  • When required, will ask patrons to separate, or leave the venue to comply with the RTS Guidelines
  • Will return a signed checklist at the end of their shift
  • Will report any participant refusing to follow reasonable requests to the Competitions Manager of the Association

Player Responsibilities 

– Participants may enter the centre a maximum of 5 minutes prior (must remain in the car until then).

– Use designated ENTRY and EXIT points. 

– Use hand sanitiser upon entry. 

– No player should come to the venue if they are unwell or have Flu like symptoms. 

– One parent per player under the age of 18, we advise that if parents don’t need to be there then they can just drop the child off.

– No Shaking of hands/High Fives. 

– Remain 1.5m apart when entering and exiting the venue, you should not walk in groups. 

– Should you feel sick before the game, (i.e. runny nose, persistent cough, headache or sore throat) you will not be allowed to attend. Should you start to feel sick during the game, let your coach know and your parents will have to collect you. 

– Drink bottles must be clearly labelled and spaced from one another. Squirting from drink bottles and pouring water over your head will not be allowed. .

 – Toilet Facilities are open. 

– At the end of the game, you must leave promptly. When leaving the facility, do not walk in groups and try to stagger your departure times. 

– If you need to talk to your coach, you can! But longer conversations should be organised via phone. 

– We encourage you and your parents to download the COVIDSafe App. 

Parent Responsibilities

– One parent per player under the age of 18, we advise that if parents don’t need to be there then they can just drop the child off.

– Should your child show a high temperature, parents must collect their child from the venue immediately. – If your child feels unwell (i.e. runny nose, persistent cough, headache or sore throat) they will not be allowed to attend the game. Should your child become sick during the game, you will be asked to pick them up immediately. During any of these cases, you should seek medical advice and organise a medical certificate for clearance to return to playing. 

– Should your child test positive to COVID-19 or come into contact with someone who has tested positive, you must contact Bellarine Peninsula Basketball Association, immediately. The Association will then contact all necessary people to alert them of the positive test and provide further information. 

– We encourage you and your child to download the COVIDSafe App. 

Coach Responsibilities 

– Coach Arrival time 10 minutes prior. – Use designated ENTRY and EXIT points. 

– Use hand sanitiser upon entry and exit of venue

– Ensure all players are adhering to their responsibilities (outlined above) at all times

– We encourage you to download the COVIDSafe App.

– No one else is to touch your equipment (ie whiteboard, marker etc)

– Santise equipment on entry
