BIG V WRAP 27th July 2024

CHAMPIONSHIP MEN
BELLARINE 110 d WESTERN PORT 91
(Kavione Green 31 & 31, Max Kos 31)

A KG masterclass led to a much needed victory for our Championship Men on Saturday night.

Western Port had no answers for an undermanned Storm line up, with KG almost scoring at will and controlling the glass, combined with Max Kos putting in one of his best shooting performances of the season.

Max set the tone early doors, connecting with his first two attempts outside the arc, to get the Storm off to a flyer, before the Steelers worked their way into the game, eventually heading Bellarine late in the first, only to have KG and Nick Velasquez go to work and get the lead back.

From there, we were never headed for the rest of the contest as the Storm controlled the contest, with KG making sure that if Western Port couldn’t hit their shot, they weren’t getting many second chances as he collected 22 of his boards at the defensive end of the court.

Max Kos lit things up at the offensive end hitting 9 of 13 from three point range, to finish with 31 points of his own.

The other highlights were Nathan Gronbeck, who collected 18 points for the match at an outstanding 87% from the field and also a breakout game from Clancy Whelan who came off the bench to score 11 points and 4 rebounds for the game.

CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN
BELLARINE 93 d SUNBURY 61
(Bridgette Rettstatt 23 & 13, Georgia Varley 20)

Our Championship Women didn’t have things all their own way in the first half of their contest against Sunbury on Saturday night, with the Jets sticking close up to half time and refused to allow the Storm to break the shackles.

However, the second half was a different case as Bellarine flexed their muscle and took control of the contest to collect yet another victory by 31 points in the end.

The match was pretty much decided in the third term as the Storm completely outclassed the home side with a 20 to 7 quarter courtesy of Bridgette Rettstatt, Courtney Strait and Georgia Varley scoring regularly, whilst Sunbury went as cold as a Polar Bear’s nose from the field, only managing 3 of 14 for the period.

Bellarine continued their dominance into the last as they continued to pile on the pain for Sunbury and win comfortably, in the process, sealing a home final in week one of the post-season.

YOUTH LEAGUE WOMEN
ELIMINATION FINAL
BELLARINE 67 d MORNINGTON 62
(Lucy Howard 22, Summer Field 14 & 11)

Our Youth League Women remain in the hunt as they scored a five point victory in their Elimination Final against Mornington in Mornington on Saturday night.

Lucy Howard was instrumental in the victory, dropping 22 points for the night, receiving great support from Summer Field with 14 and 11, however, despite a strong first half, palms did get a bit sweaty in the last quarter, as the home side launched a last gasp attempt to steal the game.

Having been pushed to just a one point lead late in the last, the Breakers had their chances to get over the Storm, however, went 0 of 4 from the field inside the last minute, whilst Summer Field was able to connect and then split a trip to the line, followed by Captain Sienna Quinlan also splitting her free throws to ice the win and move on to another sudden death final on the road again, against Sunbury this Saturday night.
