BIG V WRAP 17th August 2024

YOUTH LEAGUE WOMEN
GRAND FINAL
BELLARINE 70 d WESTERN PORT 56
(Lucy Howard 23, Sienna Quinlan 14)

After two previous cracks, it was a case of third time lucky for our Youth League Women as they created a slice of Club history by being our first Women’s Big V Champions.

And what a win it was, as the Storm started like absolute jets, stunning the home side from the start, courtesy of a 27 to 6 first term to blow the game wide open, led by Lucy Howard, putting in possibly her most important quarter of the season, as she dropped 13 points for the term.

As would be expected in a Grand Final, Western Port dug deep to try and work their way into the contest, outscoring the Storm marginally in the middle quarters, however, were only able to reduce the three quarter time margin to 13 points with one to play.

Bellarine were holding steady and continued to keep the scoreboard clicking over and keeping the Steelers at arms reach.

With a handy margin in their keeping and one hand on that elusive Championship trophy, it was a mature performance by the Storm, only needing to prevent the opposition from getting a sniff and making a late charge and that’s exactly what happened as Bellarine were steady as she comes in the last quarter as they sailed to the line for the sweet taste of victory.

Lucy Howard was deservedly named as Grand Final MVP after her match winning performance, with 23 points for the game.

To Coach David Smith, Assistant Coach David Tripodi, our players and Manager Sarah Dunn we say a massive congratulations to you all on a magnificent result and creating your own slice of Bellarine Storm history.

CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN
BELLARINE 95 d PAKENHAM 67
(Bridgette Rettstatt 22 & 20, Courtney Strait 22 & 10)

With everything on the line on Saturday night, Bellarine Storm were locked and loaded for their mission to defeat Pakenham at Storm HQ on Saturday night.

It was a pretty even beginning to the match, as both sides sizing each other up, before the Storm went to work to set up an early buffer on the scoreboard, to lead by nine points at quarter time.

With Chantelle Hall under an injury cloud, it meant Bellarine’s bigs needed to work a bit harder than usual to cover that situation and early doors, Bridgette Rettstatt and Courtney Strait made their presence felt, both on the boards and on the scoresheet as they set the tone for the rest of the night.

Bellarine’s pace and organisation in offence were causing plenty of headaches for Pakenham, who were struggling to keep pace with the Storm’s ball movement throughout the night and were working hard to stay in touch but to no avail as the Storm lead stretched to 16 points with a quarter to come.

The last term was all Bellarine as the Storm quickly changed gears in the last quarter via Charlotte Armstrong who was leading the scoring with eight for the term, whilst Bridgette Rettstatt dominated the boards with six for the quarter as the Storm cruised into this weeks Preliminary Final match up with Wyndham.
