2023 Year in Review

As we reach the end of 2023, it’s an opportunity to look back and reflect on the achievements of the past year.

2023 has been a sizeable one for the Bellarine Peninsula Basketball Association, with a number of records achieved through the course of the year, with many team and personal achievements along the way.

Here’s a list of what’s happened in 2023 for the Storm:

  • Domestic Competition Summer Season 2023/2024 we have a record of 366 teams (a 10% increase over our previous record)
  • 3097 Registered members (a BPBA Record)
  • $1.1 Million in revenue (70% increase over 5 years)
  • 5244 Domestic games played, 480 VJBL games played and 40 Big V games played (BPBA Record)
  • Aussie Hoops participation 400 (BPBA Record and top 15 in State) Slam Jam participation 205 (BPBA Record)
  • 48 School Visits (BPBA Record)
  • School Holiday Camps – 706 participates (BPBA Record)
  • 43 new Referees, 29 new C Grade and 8 B Grades
  • VJBL Teams, 9 teams made finals, 7 made Grand Finals and 5 won Championships (BPBA Record)
  • VJBL – 1 State Player, 1 Southern Cross Challenge Player and  8 Jamboree Players 
  • Tryouts conducted prior to school holidays. 250+ kids attended tryouts this year with 68 in the u14 boys alone. (BPBA Record)
  • Held BV Club Coach Course with 28 New Club Accredited Coaches
  • 23 VJBL Teams for 2023/24 season (BPBA Record)
  • Big V Women’s Division One Runners Up
  • Big V Youth League Women’s Runner Up
  • Big V – 2 Coach of the year awards (Tim Sanderson Coach of the Year D1 Women & David Smith Coach of the Year YL2 Women)
  • Big V – 6 Player awards (Georgia Varley D1 Women All Star Five and Golden Hands Award, Piper Copeland YL2 Women All Star Five, Golden Hands & Best Defensive Player and Summer Field YL2 Women All Star Five)
  • Big V Women’s team promoted to Championship Division (1 of 7 associations in the State to have both Mens and Womens compete at Championship Level and 1 of 2  Country associations)
  • 2 new Major Sponsors in Hoop City and Showtime Basketball Tours, both on 3 year agreements
  • Signings of Courtney Strait, Kavione Green, Liam McInerney and Nick Velasquez for our Championship Teams for 2024
  • New merchandise partner 6th Man supplying us Nike products

Phew, what a year!

Now we look forward to building on those achievements in 2024 with many more exciting opportunities to continue to grow and develop our Association.
