Big V Wrap Round 7

Round 7 in Big V will go down as one of one of the more memorable rounds in our Big V journey, however, not necessarily for the playing action but more for the appearance of the elements!

Division 1 Women
Bellarine 65 defeated Mildura 43

(Georgia Varley 19, Bh’rea Griffin 11, Chantelle Hall 10 & 10)
In one of the most bizarre finishes to a game of basketball, our Division 1 Women’s game against Mildura on Saturday night was abandoned with 1:48 remaining in the third term after a massive hailstorm hit the gym and hailstones started falling on the court in a freak occurrence.

This caused a 20 minute delay in the game and following a discussion between the Referees and the two Coaches, it was agreed that the game wouldn’t continue.

Up to that stage though, the Storm were well in control against the Heat, following a 30 to 18 start to the game and a continued domination of the visitors at both ends of the floor.

Georgia Varley led the way for the Storm with 19 points and Bh’rea Griffin had 11, whilst Chantelle Hall continues her purple patch returning a 10 and 10 double for the night.

Youth League 2 Women
Bellarine 62 defeated Whittlesea 57
(Summer Field 22, Ash Withers 12 )

Our Youth League Women continued on their winning way on Saturday night but didn’t have things all their own way, as Whittlesea made the Storm work hard for the victory by 5 points in the end.

After a tight battle in the first and most of the second term, the Pacers headed the Storm with 4 minutes to go before the half, however, that was the only point of the game where the home side were in front, as Bellarine continued to keep their noses in front to the final buzzer.

Summer Field had another strong night for the Storm with 22 points at 50% from the field and also pulled down 9 boards to be the difference in the end. Ash Withers also had a nice night with 12 points.

Youth League 2 Men
Bellarine 68 lost to Pakenham 74
(Ezekiel Rickard 17, Vinnie Whelan 15 points & 11 rebounds)

A slow start to the contest proved to be the difference down the stretch for our Youth League Men on Saturday night, allowing Pakenham to get away to a 21 to 14 lead by quarter time.

The Storm narrowed Pakenham’s lead to just three points by the half, before letting the visitors get back to a 7 point buffer by the last break.

Without Keegan Johnson and Ben Walters, Ezekiel Rickard stepped up to score 17 points for the Storm, including an impressive 5 of 7 from outside the arc. Vinnie Whelan was also important with 15 points and 11 on the glass, however, it wasn’t to be in the end, as despite a strong finish, the clock became the Storm’s enemy in the last, falling 6 points short of the win.
