Big V Wrap Round 9

A disappointing night is the best way to sum up round 9 of Big V Basketball for the Storm, losing all three games on Saturday night at the hands of Melbourne University.

Championship Men
Bellarine 74 lost to Melbourne University 101
(Nathan Gronbeck 14, Josh Chery, Bryce Cashman & Lewie Varley 13)

The excitement of the first win of the season was short lived for our Championship Men, as they crashed to a 27 point loss to Melbourne University on Saturday night.

Up to three quarter time, the game was in the balance with the Black Angels holding sway by just 3 points. From there it was all Melbourne Uni as they went on a 34 to 10 run in the last term to race away with the contest.

The Storm couldn’t buy a basket in the last term, going 4 of 20 for the quarter, whilst the home side were almost scoring at will, going at 60% to the finish line.

Nathan Gronbeck led scoring for the Storm with 14, whilst Josh Chery, Bryce Cashman and Lewie Varley contributed 13 each for the night.

Division 1 Women
Saturday
Bellarine 67 lost to Melbourne University 74

(Georgia Varley 20, Jaimee Crombie 13)
It was a promising start for our Division 1 Women on Saturday night as they held sway against the home side for the majority of the opening term, before Melbourne Uni snatched the lead just short of quarter time.

Sadly for the Storm, we didn’t see the lead again for the remainder of the contest, falling by 7 points for just our second loss of the season.

An uncharacteristic night of errors cost the Storm their opportunity to stay on top of the table as the opposition made the most of their chances to press their advantage.

Jamiee Crombie and Alivia Osborne toiled hard for the Storm on the night and Georgia Varley tried to keep the Storm in the contest in the last, dropping 12 points for the term, however, the horse had bolted.

Youth League 2 Men
Bellarine 64 lost to Melbourne University 83
(Mitch Smith 20, Ben Walters 10)

To keep the horse analogy going, our Youth League Men missed the jump in the opening term, allowing Melbourne University to establish a handy break by the end of the first.

From there, Melbourne Uni controlled the contest for the remainder of the night, with the Storm unable to peg back the lead at any point of the game.

Mitch Smith continued to be a shining light for the Storm this season, with a 20 point return for the game, with Captain Ben Walters the only other player to make double figures with 10 for the night.
