BIG V WRAP 3rd August 2024

CHAMPIONSHIP MEN
BELLARINE 99 d PAKENHAM 96
(Kavione Green 34 & 20, Lewie Varley 23)

A nice way to finish the season for our Championship Men, as they complete back to back wins to end their 2024 campaign, defeating Pakenham by 3 points at Storm HQ on Saturday night.

Lewis Varley nearly set fire to the court in the first quarter, putting together a superb performance with 5 of 7 shooting from downtown and a massive 19 points for the term, to have the Storm humming.

From there on, Pakenham worked hard to try and claw their way back into the contest, however, with KG doing KG things, with 34 points and 20 rebounds, it was making life tough for the visitors.

Pakenham finally fought back enough to head the Storm 86-85 half way through the last, then enter Nick Velasquez as he dropped two three pointers to level and then ice the contest for win number 11 of the season for the Storm.

To Coach Luke Beauglehall, Assistant Coaches Leigh Allan and Chris Clyne, along with our players, we say thank you for all of your efforts across the season in representing our Club in 2024.

CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN
BELLARINE 68 d BULLEEN 62
(Bridgette Rettstatt 15 & 10, Courtney Strait, Ally Knights 11)

In for what intense and purposes was a dead rubber, Bellarine came out on top against their opponent in their first final this coming Saturday, defeating Bulleen by 6 points.

The Storm set the early pace to lead by seven points at the first break, before the Boomers worked their way back into the game to level at half time.

After another 10 minutes of the game, three quarter time arrived and the teams still couldn’t be separated as the Storm and Boomers were tied at 54 each with one to play.

As they’ve done a number of times this season, the Storm found a way to grab the lead and draw away form their opponents in the last, although neither team really expended too much energy and tried to keep their respective powders dry ahead of this Saturday night’s Qualifying Final at Storm HQ.

YOUTH LEAGUE WOMEN
SEMI-FINAL
BELLARINE 66 d SUNBURY 63
(Sienna Quinlan 19, Lucy Howard, Summer Field 12)

Our Youth League Women are putting together an outstanding, against the odds performance in their Finals series, surviving yet another cut throat elimination Final to end Sunbury’s season, with a three point win on Saturday night.

The win sees our Women advance to a Preliminary Final, again on the road, to Sherbrooke this Saturday night.

It was a real arm wrestle this one, with survival riding on the outcome, both sides dug deep and in a similar situation to the Championship Women’s game, scores were tied at Quarter time and Half Time, before the home side began to make their charge, dominating the third quarter to set up a 10 point buffer and seemingly on their way to a Preliminary Final appearance.

However, to our ladies credit, the Storm put their pedal to the metal and drove hard to the finish line, with a 22 to 9 onslaught to come over the top and snatch victory to end the Jets’ 2024 season.

It was a real across the board effort for the Storm in the last, with every player on court playing their role and contributing in some way to a stunning victory for the Storm.
