BIG V WRAP 15th & 16th June 2024
The word of the weekend for our round of Big V Basketball was overtime, with both our Champ Men and Women needing extra time to get over their opposition on Saturday night.
CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN
BELLARINE 87 d PAKENHAM 76 – OT
(Courtney Strait, Georgia Varley – 15)
Our Championship Women were the first cab off the rank in ‘Overtime Saturday’, as a few late turn overs allowed Pakenham to tie the scores at the end of regular time.
The Storm’s task was made a little more difficult across the night, following a collision between Bridgette Rettstatt and Chantelle Hall in the second quarter, leading to Bridgette having to sit out the remainder of the game.
Despite Rettstatt’s absence, the Storm continued to look in control for most of the game, apart from a rare hiccup in the last term, where Pakenham put the blowtorch on the storm, outscoring them by 33 to 20 forcing the game to extra time.
Normal transmission was resumed in extra time, as the Storm grabbed the early jump on Pakenham to dominate and run out 11 point winners, extending their current run to six wins, further entrenching themselves at the pointy end of the competition.
Overall, it was an across the board effort, with Chantelle Hall, Courtney Strait, Ally Knights, Charlotte Armstrong and Georgia Varley notching double figure scores, whilst Hall, Strait and Armstrong all pulling down double figure boards for the match
CHAMPIONSHIP MEN
BELLARINE 99 d PAKENHAM 92 – OT
(Nick Velasquez, Rohan Jarvie)
Well, if one overtime game in a night wasn’t enough, our Championship Men decided a further one was needed in the following game against Pakenham.
In a game befitting match of the week billing, this was a close and hard fought battle from go to woah, with neither side really able to shake the other off throughout the entire match.
Bellarine held the lead at every change, except when the final buzzer went, with the Warriors managing to level the scores at the end of regular time, forcing the contest into overtime.
The Storm’s big guns in KG (21), Nick Velasquez (22) and Liam McInerney (15) were prominent throughout the night, along with Rohan Jarvie, who had a double double with 22 & 10 to be a key part of the win.
In fact, Jarvs owned overtime, scoring 11 of the Storm’s 20 points of the term, to go with 2 rebounds, 1 block and a steal to lead the Bellarine charge to victory and win number 4 on the trot.
YOUTH LEAGUE WOMEN
BELLARINE 78 d SUNBURY 59
(Lucy Howard 21 & 16, Piper Copeland 14)
Sunday’s Youth League Women’s clash belonged to Lucy Howard, who dominated the contest at both ends of the court, finishing with 21 points and 16 boards for the day.
The win also gave usual Assistant Coach David Tripodi his second win as a Head Coach, interestingly, both of those wins coming against Sunbury, in the absence of Coach David Smith.
It was a slow start by the Storm, as the Jets moved to an 11 point buffer at quarter time, before Bellarine got into gear in the second term through Howard, who was a dominant presence at both ends of the court finishing the second term with 8 points, 3 boards and 2 steals as part of their 20 to 6 dominance, setting up a 3 point lead at the main break.
The second half of the game belonged to the Storm as they were able to keep control of the contest for the majority of the second half and push away to a strong 19 point win, including an 17 – 0 run through the mid part of the last, to snuff out any chances of a Sunbury victory.
YOUTH LEAGUE MEN
BELLARINE 48 lost to WARRANDYTE 83
(Mitch Smith – 13)
Unfortunately, our Youth League Men couldn’t make it a clean sweep for the weekend, going down to Warrandyte by 35 points.
Bellarine enjoyed the lead for some of the opening term, however, Warrandyte controlled the majority of the contest for the rest of the afternoon, as the Storm struggled to find a regular source of scoring, with Mitch Smith held to just 13 points for the contest, with no other player making double figures.
Despite the final scoreline, there were still some positives to come out of the day for the Storm, with Jack Maultby scoring his first points in his return from his knee injury, along with the efforts of Khan Fereti and Will McCreddin late in the game, both showing promising signs in their development.
