BIG V WRAP 13th & 14th April 2024
First wins for our Youth League Men and Championship Women highlighted Big V action for the Storm over the weekend.
YOUTH LEAGUE MEN
BELLARINE 85 d MELTON 79
(Daniel Clifton 22, Mitch Smith 19)
In a great boost for the team, our Youth League Men got to taste that winning feeling for the first time this season, with a 6 point victory against Melton at Melton on Saturday night.
After a very even first term, Melton took a narrow 2 point lead into the second quarter, setting up a hard fought battle by both sides through the second term, with several lead changes before the Storm headed the contest at half time with a one point lead.
Daniel Clifton (22) and Harry Crane were both instrumental in leading the Storm across the night, to be key playmakers, whilst Mitch Smith (19) continued his nice early season form.
The third term was another even battle, although mid term, the Storm, through Bailey Goodgame and Mitch Smith went on a 8 – 0 run, to ease the Storm out to an 8 point lead with a quarter to play.
With a handy buffer heading into the last, it was again Clifton, Crane, Smith and Ben Walters who stepped up for the Storm and lead the team to their opening win of 2024 in a well deserved victory.
YOUTH LEAGUE WOMEN
BELLARINE 61 lost to WESTERN PORT 68
(Alicia Field 13 & 12, Karli Bruce, Sienna Quinlan 12)
The Storm got off to a promising start in this one, as they set up an early 6 point lead by quarter time, through Karli Bruce who put up 8 of the team’s 20 first quarter points and Summer Field who found her range from outside the arc early.
Western Port nipped at the Storm’s heels all the way through the second term, drawing level with seconds remaining before Piper Copeland hit a clutch three pointer to take the Storm into half time with the lead still in their possession.
The third quarter was almost a carbon copy of the second term as the Storm continued to hold a slight lead through the period, managing to put some distance between them and their opponent on the scoreboard before the home side pressed again to narrow the Storm’s lead to just one point inside the last 30 seconds, before Sienna Quinlan this time, hit the three pointer to end the third and hold the lead at four points with one to come.
It was a good old shoot out down the stretch as both teams jockeyed to the line, with four lead changes through the term, the last of those saw Western Port take the lead with about two minutes remaining in the quarter and then going on a 6 – 0 run to the final buzzer to head the Storm by seven points, for our first loss for the season.
Alicia Field was key for the Storm with 13 points and 12 boards for the match, whilst Karli Bruce and Sienna Quinlan both chipping in with 12 points a piece.
CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN
BELLARINE 86 d SUNBURY 57
(Chantelle Hall 26, Bridgett Rettstatt 20 & 14)
After pushing one of the top sides in Championship Women last week, the Storm kept that momentum rolling into Sunday’s match on the road against Sunbury, coming away with their first win for the season by 29 points.
Chantelle Hall was in ‘beast mode’ to start the game, scoring almost at will and collecting 10 of the Storm’s 18 points for the first term to have her side up by six points at quarter time. Bridgette Rettstatt was also showing that she will be an important cog in the Bellarine machine with five points, 3 rebounds and an assist for the opening term.
The second term saw the Storm put their ‘pedal to the metal’ and press their advantage with a 25 to 15 second period to head to the rooms with a very comfortable 16 point buffer at the main break. The pleasing aspect for the Storm was that there were a number of different scoring options contributing to the tally through the term.
Despite upping their scoring output in the third term, the Jets just couldn’t reel the Storm in and make any inroads into their lead by three quarter time, Bellarine still in front by 19 points with one to play.
The last term was the Hall and Rettstatt show, as they set about shooting 16 points between them for the term, out of a team total of 25 for the quarter to lead the Storm to their opening win for the season and their first at the Championship level.
CHAMPIONSHIP MEN
BELLARINE 77 lost to SUNBURY 98
(Kavione Green 23, Rohan Jarvie 11 & 11)
Not the follow up result we were hoping for as our Championship Men fell to Sunbury on Sunday afternoon by 21 points.
The damage was done by half time, as the home side took a 23 point lead into the main break and give the Storm a big mountain to climb in the second half.
Whilst the Storm’s scoring output really stepped up in the third term, they just couldn’t stem the scoring at the other end of the court as the Jets continued to score and maintain their advantage on the scoreboard with one to play.
KG continued his fine start to his time with the Storm, finishing with 23 points for the day, whilst Rohan Jarvie, who is also in some nice touch early doors this season, had a double double with 11 points and 11 rebounds for the afternoon.
